A love lost

In 1979, fate wove our paths together when Cecilia joined the Ministry of Economic Planning, where I too laboured with dedication. Though our initial meetings were fleeting, destiny had other plans. After a two-year interlude and a merger of ministries, the opportunity to truly connect with Cecilia arose.

By 1984, I found the courage to ask for her hand, and her joyful acceptance marked the beginning of our shared journey. Cecilia brought with her a son, Dela, and I brought James, and together we ventured to knit our lives into one harmonious tapestry. Our family soon grew with the births of Maame Aba and Angela, and Cecilia embraced each role with unwavering grace.

She was a beacon of strength and love, a chief disciplinarian with an eye for order and detail, even until her last days. Our home was her canvas, and she painted it with love and structure, often transforming our wardrobe with her meticulous touch. Christmas, in particular, was a testament to her spirit, a celebration that she infused with warmth and joy.

When Cecilia set her mind on something, it was as good as done. Her generous spirit always extended a warm welcome and a helping hand to family, embodying kindness in every gesture.

I remember her as my ‘town council,’ always guiding and organising with an uncanny ability to keep everything in its place. She never let responsibilities weigh on me, shouldering them with quiet efficiency and love. Her support was the bedrock of our family’s well-being, and her absence leaves a void that words can scarcely fill.

She affectionately called me Sam, and I could always sense her mood by the way she said my name. Her ears were always open to my jokes, sharing in the laughter and light moments.

Seeing Cecilia unwell this past month was a profound heartache, a stark contrast to the care and strength she always showed me. As I saw her in her final moments, the pain of loss was tempered by the comfort that her suffering had ended. Though I am shattered by her absence, I vow to remain steadfast, honouring the life and love we shared.

Cecilia, you were the love of my life, and your presence was a gift I will cherish forever. Rest in perfect peace, my dearest. Until we meet again, your memory will guide me, and your love will remain in my heart.
